Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
